What Is Food?

The word food brings to mind comfort, sustenance and happiness. A lot of people eat food because they need it and some people even like to eat food just to be liked. Food has been a central part of every civilization from ancient times. The first person to write about the food was the Egyptian papyrus, which described the diet of the people at the time of ancient Egyptian history. According to historians, ancient Egyptians ate a wide range of foods including plants, seeds, roots, tubers, fruits, honey, fat and processed meats.

Food is anything consumed to give nutrition to an organism. In today’s contemporary society, we have many kinds of food, which are becoming more popular all the time. The very basic definition of food is that it is a food intended for human consumption is usually direct or indirect by other means. Food is normally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and has all necessary nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or mineral.

These days, the most popular food is meat and poultry, fish and seafood, sugar and refined carbohydrate sources, vegetable oils, dairy products, legumes, whole grains, cereals, and other legume based foods like black beans and Lima beans, lentils, peas, etc. With the exception of North America, Europe and Asia, most people depend on food obtained from cereals and legumes, which are legumes. In Africa, potatoes and dates are used for cooking. Most people in sub-Saharan Africa eat maize and sorghum legumes.

In Asia, traditionally most people eat rice, noodles, cowries, grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, iron-rich foods, etc. Soya beans were considered a luxury in Asian countries but are now grown in large quantities in sub-Saharan Africa. In Europe, bread, cereals, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, lentils, whole grain products, cheese, butter, margarine, butter, eggs, poultry and eggs, dairy products, fruits, legumes, vegetables and other animal products. In Latin America, corn is grown. In Middle East, traditionally beans, dates, tomatoes and onions were the staple diet.

When people need to lose weight, they need to follow a well balanced diet to avoid over consumption of calories. Overeating of any food is harmful, as the body converts some of the available energy, especially fats, into stored fat. The best way to avoid overeating is to choose balanced and portion controlled meals and eat foods that are low in calories and high in nutrition. For instance, a serving of potato is equal to one cup of dessert or half a cup of ice cream. Some people need to cut down on their daily intake of foods rich in sugar, salt and fat, but it depends on how much they are willing to do.

Vitamin A is found in fruits, vegetables, fortified milk, eggs and nuts, whereas Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and strengthens bones. Vitamin E improves immunity, while Vitamin C provides antioxidants that prevent free radical damage, which can be a cause of cancer. Vitamin K helps manufacture the hormones that help people remain healthy, while the fat-soluble vitamins E and B help make sure that the liver works properly, along with folic acid, iron, calcium, magnesium, iodine, and the essential fatty acids. These are the major food sources for vitamins C, D, K, and B.
