The sports that engage the greatest amount of physical activity are contact sports such as football, basketball, softball, baseball and volleyball. These types of games require both speed and strength, and the participants often use a lot of energy and mental focus to excel in their chosen field of sport. Being able to manage both the physical ability and the mental strength is essential in the long run.

Since the games are often controlled by gender and age differences, young girls often play sports at a much higher level than boys, and young boys and girls frequently compete against each other in physical activities such as boxing. Through these controlled competition levels, many young people learn to set goals, work hard, and to be competitive. This helps to create healthy change in the overall culture.

Another reason that sports help to create social change is that they provide a physical activity other than what most children are exposed to. Playing sports, especially organized sports, helps to improve strength, balance, endurance, flexibility, and body awareness. It also provides an environment where people from different backgrounds and skill sets can compete against one another, increasing communication and understanding skills. These factors help to create a healthier society and stimulate physical activity in the community.

In the United States, there are many organized sports programs that promote health and fitness. The National Competitive Sports Association, or the NCAA, has a long history of providing a competitive outlet for collegiate and intercollegiate athletics. Other major league sports leagues, such as the NFL, work with local community teams to provide opportunities for physical activity and social interaction. Major League Baseball, in addition to providing regular season games between teams, offers mini-games and community functions to allow fans to attend a game in person while enjoying a competitive edge. Finally, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, has worked with a variety of different organizations to promote good sportsmanship and healthy competition at its events.
