Why you need to budget and hire a professional photographer for your wedding.

Today we’re talking about something that is near and dear to my heart- hiring professionals for your wedding. One would think that hiring professionals would be a no-brainer, but this isn’t always true. Sometimes you just want to spend as little as possible, and so you resort to trying to find “alternatives” for the usual wedding services. And some of these “alternatives” usually end up involving having a friend or family member or friend of a friend or distant cousin do something instead of hiring a professional. In fact, there are even wedding planning sites out there that will tell you to not hire professionals in order to save money. Well friends, that is NOT the kind of wedding planning site PEP  is. If you ask me, not hiring professionals is a recipe for disaster! Hiring a friend would end up causing way more issues than paying for a professional would… and yes, you get what you pay for!

Lately in in our area the couples shorted their budget, hired a friend or a pensioner for a couple hundred euros and tried to get away with saving.  They all lost, and lost big, precious memories, that you can’t go back and recapture.

The nightmare wedding in the night.  This couple did not think about a problem, taking photos outside in the dark, nor did their inexpensive photographer. The result was a nightmare. The photographer had trouble capturing photos, that were of any value to the couple.  What a shame and nightmare, that can’t be changed.

 

Don’t just take it from me though.  This couple unfortunately found out the hard way when they decided to let a “budding photographer” friend take their wedding photos. The thing is though, this wasn’t a friend who had shot a few weddings and was trying to get into the industry. He just had a “nice camera” and so they asked him to capture their day. To make a long story short, this “photographer” lost the couple’s image card and now they have no wedding photos. Because he wasn’t a professional and didn’t know what he was doing. Yeah… that’s awful, isn’t it? Can you imagine?

Here’s the thing- if it was the successful norm to have your friend who has a nice camera take your wedding photos, cater your wedding, or do your flowers, there wouldn’t be professionals doing it! And there most likely wouldn’t be amazing images like this one…

 

In my experience having a friend do a professional’s job almost never works out… unless they ARE a professional who truly is your friend (in which case, you are one lucky gal!).

So before we go any further, let’s just go over a few of the reasons for why you should hire a professional and not your friend…

1. A PROFESSIONAL IS COMMITTED TO YOU.

A professional will be committed to YOU and your wedding day. They are guaranteed to show up on your wedding day, no questions asked. I’ve seen “friends” commit to photographing a wedding and then flake out 2 months – even a few weeks- before the wedding, people not show up to help on the day-of when they said they would, and even people just not caring at all. When you hire and pay a professional, they are contractually obligated to carry out the duties that you hired them to perform!

2. A PROFESSIONAL WILL HAVE EXPERIENCE.

There’s nothing worse than having everyone standing around at your wedding not knowing what to do next. Hiring someone who has experience will most definitely help your stress level both before and during the wedding. A professional with experience will also have a specific way of doing things, so there won’t be too much guesswork for you while planning your wedding. The last thing you want to have to do while planning your wedding is figure out what your friend is supposed to be doing!

3. YOU WILL GET AWESOME RESULTS FROM A PROFESSIONAL.

Or in other words, you get what you PAY for! Hiring a professional will ensure that you get a great result. Whether it’s photos or flowers, or food or coordinating, having someone who does weddings for a living will certainly give you the best outcome. It may not always be the most ideal option to spend money on a professional, but really and truly, paying for a service makes SUCH a huge difference! Not to mention that yes, there’s a contract involved, and as I stated before, they are obligated to provide you with those awesome results.

4. YOU WON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT STRAINING YOUR RELATIONSHIP.

When working with a professional, if anything, you will build a relationship with them. Almost always, when hiring a friend the relationship gets strained in some way. Either they hold a grudge against you for making them work for free or less than normal, or you’re not happy with your results and you just can’t tell them. It’s not worth ruining a relationship with one of your friends!

5. YOU WANT YOUR FRIENDS TO ENJOY YOUR WEDDING!!

If they truly are your friend, you’ll want to have them at your wedding and enjoy it, right? And if that’s not the case, then you don’t really want to even have them at your wedding.

Don’t get me wrong- there CAN be friends that help out with your wedding who will do a great job. But in my experience, it doesn’t always work out for the best.

One of the things that I’ve discovered about weddings is that it’s pretty common for “friends” who “do weddings” to pop up when you get engaged. What a coincidence that you have a friend who photographs weddings, coordinates, AND is a DJ, right?! At the time, it seems lucky and like you have all your bases covered, but please do your best to make an informed decision when friends offer to help with your wedding.

I would love to hear from you all on this. Do you have any friends who wanted to help you with your wedding? Did you decide to go with them, or go with a professional? And any former brides out there… did you have any experiences with “friends”?  Did you hire a retired photographer, who lost his grip and has a shake of unfocused photos? Let’s talk about budget.

These days a regular  budget in a minimum of 1500 for photography which includes a few hours of photography, and a wedding photo book.  But this price comes without a backup photographer or two.  When you can spend 2500-3500 it  goes much further, you get more for your money and the photographer can afford backup photographers to cover his photos and behind the scenes photos.  Well spent, well invested. Beautiful wedding books, photo slideshow videos with music and many other lasting memories.

By now you are probably thinking about budgeting much more in your photography budget and that is a great thing.

Don’t forget about professional videography.

This is also a forgotten step and like photographers, many couples skim the budget and just have a family member or friend do some videos.  What we do is we ask you to provide us with some family members and friends that would be good with video, so they can help our professional video team capture moments we might not of thought about.  Then we can tailor a custom video package that includes the latest and greatest drone wedding photography.  Combined together with professional broadcast quality video moments, you wedding video can also be like it was live on a TV show.  Imagine with me for a moment, there are several video cameras, and one is stationed behind the minister pointed at you, the other in the center of the isle, pointed at the crowd, another behind the minister to get close up shots and another going around the audience taking something that is called “cut aways” where they capture the expressions and emotions of the audience.   When these are captured together, some thing you can’t see a tear in your mother’s eye as you say the “I Do’s ” and the look of your best friend laughing , when the ring bearer gets a little mis-behaved.  All these moments are usually talked about, but imagine you and your bride watching the video after your honeymoon and see the vantage point , the whole big picture.

That’s how important wedding videos are. It’s why one of our camera operators, is called upon when there are special events, and they want a close up camera man that can follow the action and not miss anything.

Budgeting for video can seem pricey, but it is worth the investment and spending anywhere from 1500, to 3500 more on video, can bring you and your loved ones, family and friends some magical moments and memories.

CATCH UP WITH THE LATEST ON BRIDES

12 months to go

–      It’s time to talk money. Get any awkward conversations about setting the budget out the way pronto and work out what to spend where. A structure at this point will be invaluable; for a guide, here’s what the average Brides reader spends.

–      Set the date, but be prepared to be flexible: there’s nothing worse than finding your dream venue is booked on your must-have date.

–      Work out your guest numbers – who to invite and who to leave off the list (Tip: cutting guest numbers by just 10 people could shave a cool £1,400 off your wedding costs!)

–      Do the other proposal. 79% of you had already chosen your bridesmaids before you got engaged, if you didn’t, now’s the time to ask them.

–      Buy wedding insurance. Sounds dull, but no one wants their dream wedding ruined by accidents or other unplanned mishaps do they?

11 months to go

–      Write the guest list. Can guests bring children? What about plus ones? And do you really need to invite the whole office? We help bust those myths here

–      Save the date! Whether it’s at the click of a button or with a lick’n’stick stamp – you wouldn’t want your favourite cousin to be on hols when you’re throwing the bouquet: get your date in guests’ diaries now.

–      Book your photographer. The best ones get snapped up quickly. Make it a priority to let them get to know you; it’ll help them perform better for you on the day. These top tips might help

–      Start the search for ‘The One’. Well, the other one, that is: your dress. Consult the pages of Brides, scan thousands of dresses here and book those all-important bridal boutique appointments.

10 months to go

–      Buy the wedding dress! Note: if you’re going bespoke, you’ll need to allow at least six months for completion, and bear in mind alteration times and costs, too. It’s a good time to consider shoes and any other accessories to complete the look. Need inspiration? Visit our galleries.

–      Start honeymoon planning: from budget to location, flights to hotel. You might find surprisingly good deals this far in advance. For inspiration, see our 2015 award winners here.

–      Live music or DJ set? Book your entertainment now – think about timings and any restrictions your venue might have, too – you’ll have time to fine tune the exact songs later.

9 months to go

–      Let’s talk flowers. From your bridal bouquet to reception decor, discuss seasonality of your favourite blooms and the all-important arrangement composition with your florist. Don’t forget to ask them these important questions.

–      Do the taste test. Firm up your menu and drinks with your caterer, bearing in mind allergy sufferers and vegetarians where possible. Be inspired by our food and drink ideas!

–      Go bridesmaid dress shopping! No doubt they’ve had their say on yours – so now it’s your turn to sit in the advisor’s chair. (Tip: discuss who is buying what straight away to avoid awkward conversations later)

8 months to go

–      Choose your readings and music. If it’s a church wedding, it’s time to discuss with the minister and musicians – but if it’s a civil ceremony, you’ll need to find out what’s permitted and adapt accordingly.

–      Chase those pesky non-RSVPers. It’s totally fine to ask if they’re coming or not: you need to know.

–      Order the stationery! Invites, envelopes, place cards, menus and seating plan. Or if you’re DIY-ing it, it’s time to get cracking. See some of our favourite designs to get you started.

7 months to go

–      Think about travel. From transporting guests to and from the venue to your grand entrance and get-away car, get any vehicles hired for the day now.

–      Ooh… cake! Settle on a showstopper – and bear in mind flavours, composition, how it will be transported and the type of icing if you’re planning on saving any.

–      Choose (and/or) order your wedding favours. Though why not have a go at making your own? Follow our easy step-by-step guides.

6 months to go

–      Kit out your fiancé and ushers. This may be a job for him, though 3/4 of you said you’d help him pick his suit. Hiring outfits are a great way to save money, particularly if the men will wear morning suits or tails.

–      Pick your wedding rings

–      Confirm the order of service with your minister or registrar and have guest books printed. (Psst! If you’re having a choir, they’ll need copies too!)

5 months to go

–      It’s all about the make-up! If you’re hiring a make-up artist, book those all-important trial sessions. If it’s a DIY job – head to the nearest department store and pick up trial sizes of any products you might like to wear. Not sure where to start? These tips will help.

–      Pick (or even make!) your bridal fragrance. Boutiques like Jo Malone or Bloom offer special bridal services and are well worth checking out. Or see our guide to tackling the department store perfume hall.

4 months to go

–      Check your passport date. It must have at least six months left on it from the date you want to travel – and don’t get all wed-eyed and book under your married name. If your passport doesn’t match up, you won’t be boarding the plane.

–      Need visas or inoculations for your honeymoon? Find out and book.

–      Get those hen-party plans in action! A great one to delegate to your maid of honour (an important part of the role, right?) These are some of our favourites.

3 months to go

–    Give notice. It may be unromantic, but – regardless of religion or culture – this is a legal requirement that formalises your intent to marry. Visit www.gov.uk for what you need to know, and consult our guide.

–    Organise a rehearsal before the big day and make sure the most important wedding party members will be there.

–    Church of England wedding? Attend a reading of the banns. They’re usually held three consecutive Sundays before your wed-day.

2 months to go

–    If you’ve delegated tasks to your fiancé, ‘maids or family, check how they’re getting on – you may need to pick up the slack to make sure everything’s sorted.

–    Try on your entire wedding outfit! Forgotten anything? Now’s the time to get it.

–    Make sure you’ve got that bridal glow sorted by booking any other beauty treatments (fake tan, manicure etc.) Here are our top five fake tans.

1 month to go

–    Try out hairstyles with your hairdresser, making sure you take the tiara, crown, circlet or accessories you plan to wear. Or, if you’re taking charge, our galleries and bloggers’ YouTube tutorials are a great source of inspiration.

–    Gather your hens for a girls-only celebration. After all that planning, it’s time to party: congratulations!

We do blessings mostly, because most weddings are from out of country. We recommend getting legally married in a Court or Marriage Office of your local government for your country. Then make your wedding and celebrations in Spain.

Celebrity Weddings in Spain

We just wanted to say thank you very much for the enormous amount of help we had from you both in the run up to the wedding and on the day itself. It turned out to be a perfect day in every way. We know that it wouldn't have been so perfect without your help so a million thanks from us both.
