Food is any material consumed to provide nutrition to an organism for life. In most cases food is of animal, plant or fungi origin, and consists of essential nutrients, including vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fat, or minerals. Plants derive their energy from food, and animals can use it to transport food from one level of the plant to another. The main types of food are plant food, which includes starch and fiber sources; animal food, which includes meat, milk and eggs; and fungi, which includes sugar, vitamins and enzymes.

Foods that a person eats can be divided into two broad categories: those that provide energy and growth, and those that provide body building or maintenance. An ideal diet should contain protein, fat, carbohydrates, calcium, calories and other nutrients in proper proportions. In order to grow healthy, a nutritious diet must include enough proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. However, because protein is the most easily digested form of food, it is often used as the major component in a diet.

Proteins are necessary to keep the body running properly and build the tissues. Therefore, an adequate supply of proteins is necessary to keep a person alive and growing. The types of protein that are usually deficient in people suffering from a deficiency in certain foods are: fats, starches, vegetables (except those high in oil), and fruits. High blood sugar may also lead to nutritional deficiencies. Foods that are high in sugar tend to be refined, processed foods that contain lots of preservatives, colorings and artificial flavoring. This type of nutrition is not appropriate for long-term use, as it often leads to health problems and is extremely unhealthy. A good diet that is low in sugar is always beneficial for the body’s development. This type of nutrition includes organic foods, like fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, pasta, legumes (like black beans and lima beans), seeds, nuts and organic dairy products.

Low in nutrients is another major problem for many people. The best way to solve the problem is to eat the recommended servings of each of the food groups, at least five portions a day. A balanced and healthy diet will provide you with all the nutrients you need.
